Logo Design Tips

Corporate identity refers to the visible elements such as name, logotypes, symbols, signs, letterhead, packaging, business cards, etc., that are used to identify a company. One of the most important identity is logo.

Why a company or business need a logo?

  • Introduction
If you are small business trying to establish yourself online or offline then the first thing that you introduce to potential customers is your company logo. The effect your logo has on potential customers or website visitors will influence their buying decisions.
  • Image Creation
When meeting a prospective client, a business card would speak a lot about the type of company you are associated with and the quality of the company service. A cheap looking card with a poorly done logo could instantly create a feeling of distrust in the client, and from here it would be an up-hill ride for you in order to sell them anything.
  • Effective Promotion
For service-oriented businesses, which do not have any tangible products that could be promoted to convince the customers, it is the image of the company logo alone that can be used in custom promotional products to sway the buyer’s mood. Therefore, such companies have to be extra careful in the logo design they opt for.
  • Unique Identity
A few years ago, it was sufficient to have a company name in text in order to go about your business. Today, however, with an increasing number of players competing for the same market it has become more difficult for companies to distinguish themselves. In fact, even the brick and mortar companies have to pay attention when it comes to their logo. A home made logo is no longer sufficient, especially in the case of internet based companies, to compete against the bigger companies, who may potentially have unlimited marketing budget.

Here are some guidelines you can follow to create a good logo:

  • Keep in mind that your logo is a business tool.
  • Design logo using vector graphics software.
  • Avoid complex and intricate designs.
  • Limit color selection to a maximum of three colors and harmonize them.
  • Employ consistency and control in font usage.
  • Check Trademark and Registration Rights of your logo.

A professionally designed logo can really help business get the attention and clients required to succeed. The right logo, with the right characteristics, will effectively boost company’s visibility, credibility and memorably.

The characteristics of a good logo :

  • Consistency in use of your logo, tagline, materials. Repetition of similar elements, used in the same or similar ways, helps people to remember who the company are and what the company do.
  • Memorably
This ensures that your logo stays at the forefront in the mind of your potential clients and that they will think of you the next time they have a need.
  • Meaningful
This ensures that your logo will spread the message about the distinguishing characteristics of your business.
  • Unique
This helps you to distinguish company or industry from its competitors. For example, if everyone in the industry uses a particular symbol, like the case of travel agencies who often use globes in their logos, try to use something else – this will make your logo look different and uncommon.
  • Professionally Designed
This can be portrayed in the choice of quality of the graphics, the printing and the paper on which your materials are printed.
  • Timelessness
This will ensure that you do not require to redesign your logo in just a few years and that your investment and equity used in your logo design will be lasting.
  • Differentiation between the colors in your logo
This is just not in terms of hue, but in terms of value as well, so that it translates well either to black and white or grayscale, enabling even colorblind people to see it.
  • Unity among the different elements in the logo.
The logo must fit together as a single unit, and not just appear as a jumble of elements pasted together.
  • Scalability
This ensures that your logo looks equally good in every size, be it on a business card or at any size in between. To make business' name legible at different logo sizes, make sure that your designer chooses a font that is easily readable.
